Imgur user emperorcain has done an amazing job of putting together the box art of every NES cartridge by year. It is a visual feast for NES lovers and brings to mind many long forgotten titles.
While the box art for most games was quite standard, there are some notable exceptions such as Castlevania and Cobra Triangle that were a little more eye catching. There are so many games there that I never saw as a kid, such as “Monster Party”, “Raid 2020” and “Robodemons”. This may be as they were US only releases, or maybe due to the fact that due to a saturated market they sold about 5 copies each.
Scroll through each collage of box art, sorted by years and be astounded. It also makes you realise how many games were released based on movies, most of which sucked. I don’t think it’s any co-incidence that Wayne’s World was one of the last games released for the NES. Great movie, but did anyone play that game. It sucked.
One thing I am a fan of are the classic silver covers of the first epic games released for the NES, Kid Icarus and Metroid. Both of these games occupied many hours from my childhood, but also seriously improved my problem solving abilities, as did the original Zelda games.
